These homestyle fries are a comforting and delicious twist on the classic French fry. I make them by slicing large baking potatoes into thick, round slices or semi-round, but other types of potatoes will work fine. I prefer to use use an air fryer, lightly spraying the slices with oil and adding salt, in the oven on a baking sheet, or fry them on the skillet for a crispy finish. These versatile fries are perfect for dipping in ketchup or your favorite sauce.

Homestyle Round Fries

I call these my homestyle round fries, or sometimes just home fries. It's honestly quicker and easier than frozen fries or tater tots and if you use an air fryer there is less clean up. This recipe is plenty for 2 people if you are using a large Russet potato. Serve with a little ketchup or eat them plain, they're good both ways. Enjoy!

Ingredient Spotlight

Russet Potatoes: These are perfect for making round fries thanks to their size and starchy texture, which results in crispy edges and fluffy interiors. Feel free to experiment with Yukon Gold or red potatoes for a slightly different flavor and texture.

Vegetable or Olive Oil Spray: This helps achieve that golden, crispy finish with minimal oil, making cleanup easier and keeping things healthier.

Tips for Success

  • Consistency is Key: Slice your potatoes evenly to ensure they cook at the same rate. A mandoline slicer can make this quick and precise.
  • Don’t Overcrowd: Lay the slices in a single layer in the air fryer or skillet. Overlapping pieces will steam rather than crisp.
  • Customize Your Seasoning: While salt and pepper are classics, you can add garlic powder, paprika, or even a sprinkle of parmesan for extra flavor.

Custom Variations

Make this recipe your own with these ideas:

  • Spicy Fries: Sprinkle slices with cayenne pepper or chili powder before cooking.
  • Cheesy Fries: Add shredded cheese on top while they’re still hot from the fryer.
  • Garlic Herb Fries: Toss with minced garlic, parsley, and a dash of olive oil after cooking for a gourmet touch.
  • Sweet Potato Version: Swap out the Russet potato for a sweet potato for a naturally sweeter, nutrient-packed option.

Serving Suggestions

Round fries are incredibly versatile. Here are some great pairings:

  • Burgers: A classic combination that never fails.
  • Hot Dogs: Add some fries on the side for a fun, casual meal.
  • Chicken Tenders: Perfect for dipping with fries.
  • Dipping Sauces: Beyond ketchup, try ranch, garlic aioli, honey mustard, or sriracha mayo.

Storage and Reheating

Keep your fries crispy with these tips:

  • Storage: Let the fries cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheating: Warm them in the air fryer or oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes to regain their crispiness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use a regular oven instead of an air fryer? Absolutely! Bake the fries at 425 degrees, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp.

Do I have to peel the potatoes? Not at all, I actually prefer to leave it on! Leaving the skin on adds extra texture and nutrients.

What if I don’t have an oil spray? Brush the potato slices lightly with oil instead for a similar effect.

Closing Note

Homestyle Round Fries are a quick, easy, and delicious side dish that you can whip up anytime. Whether you’re using them to complement a meal or snacking on them plain, these fries are sure to be a hit. Get creative with your seasonings and dips, and enjoy every crispy, golden bite!
