That title is a mouthful, but so are these BLTs. By definition these sandwiches are extremely easy to make, so while they may not really need a recipe, I’m going to give you mine anyway. I’ve been making these BLTs every summer for many years now, often with a nice pot of potato soup.

Where to Source Garden Fresh Tomatoes in Your Area
Farmer’s Markets
One of the best places to find garden-fresh tomatoes is at your local farmer’s market. These markets are filled with vendors who grow their produce locally, ensuring that the tomatoes you buy are fresh and full of flavor. To get the best tomatoes, visit the market early in the morning when the produce is just being set out. Don’t hesitate to ask the vendors about their farming practices; most are happy to share how they grow their delicious tomatoes.
Grow Your Own
Another excellent option is to grow your own tomatoes. This might seem daunting at first, but tomatoes are relatively easy to cultivate, especially if you start with hardy varieties like heirloom or cherry tomatoes. Use organic compost to enrich your soil, which will enhance the flavor of your tomatoes. Growing your own tomatoes ensures you get the freshest produce possible, and it’s incredibly satisfying to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Local Markets
Local markets can also be a great source of garden-fresh tomatoes. Look for markets that prominently feature local produce, often marked with signs indicating the origin of the tomatoes. Engaging with the sellers can provide insights into how the tomatoes were grown and harvested. By buying locally, you support your community and get access to fresher produce compared to larger grocery stores.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Programs
Subscribing to a CSA box from a local farm is another way to get fresh tomatoes. CSA programs often include a variety of seasonal vegetables, including garden-fresh tomatoes. These programs support local agriculture and ensure that you receive high-quality, fresh produce directly from the farm to your table.
Grocery Stores
Even some grocery stores offer locally grown tomatoes, especially during the peak growing season. Identify these tomatoes by looking for labels that specify their origin. They are often found in a separate section labeled ‘local produce.’ While grocery stores might not always match the freshness of farmer’s markets or homegrown tomatoes, they can still be a convenient and viable option.
